Collection: Emily Loughlin

Emily Loughlin’s craft-based practice comes as a return to sculpture after over a decade working in architecture and urban planning. Using topographical and vegetation maps as a starting point for iterative abstractions, her works are shaped by the architect’s gaze – revealing the unseen ecological consequences of designing the world around human gain. Primarily a ceramicist, her hand-built forms incorporate metallic lusters and textile processes – using shifting material languages to highlight ecological interventions on an otherwise tectonic, mineral landscape.

Loughlin was born in 1992 in New York, NY and lives and works in Stockton, NJ. Currently a Fireline Fellow with Oregon State University and art- ist-in-residence at In Situ Polyculture Commons, Loughlin has completed residencies at Wheaton Arts Center, Artshack Brooklyn and Friends of Pando. In addition to a 2024 solo exhibition at Keepsake Gallery/Artshack, Loughlin’s works have been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, Amos Eno Gallery, Peters Valley, Automat Collective, Mudflat Studio, and Lipscomb University, among others. She earned a BA in Sculpture from Sarah Lawrence College and holds a teaching position at Mudtown Ceramics.
